Christian Bland (The Black Angels) & The Revelators will be releasing a new album March 20th through The Reverberation Appreciation Society. Here's the newly released track "13 Cent Killer." EDIT: Standard shipping and handling is annoyingly high at $5.95, and Texas taxes apply.

BadDreems - Chills

Can't stop playing this track I found over at the former Denton, Texas based, now L.A. based music blog Weekly Tape Deck. If your looking for some great recommendations check out that blog out. Kudos to them. The band here is BadDreems, with a song called Chills, and they are from Australia.

New Unknown Mortal Orchestra Video - Strangers Are Strange

COOLRUNNINGS - Dracula Is Only The Beginning

I originally checked out COOLRUNNINGS because of the obvious name relation to the movie, plus the unique cover. Right from the beginning they hit you strong, with their best song in my opinion "Chorus." It's a little difficult to pinpoint their genre upon first listen. I first thought a mix of Animal Collective & Yeasayer, but then I kept being surprised with indie rock to electro. It's a pretty solid listen to all the way through.

According to the tags on their Bandcamp they are guitarded, post-rad, pro-choice, and shifty punk from Knoxville, Tennessee. What ever that means. Another notable track is: Dracula Is Only The Beginning, but the rest of the album sounds much different than these two tracks I mentioned. You can buy the "Dracula Is Only The Beginning" LP here. ($15 plus $5 shipping) (Limited to 100 copies). Looks like they also have 4 other EP's on their bandcamp website which I haven't check out yet. Here's also a remix of them by Star Slinger. Listen to their album below though.

Also if you listen to the end of the last song on the album you are in for a surprise. I can't you what it is though. Not nice.

King Tuff - Was Dead - Limited LP Repress

Jebus, I'm excited about this garage pop re-issue. King Tuff - Was Dead, distributed through Burger Records and released under Colonel Records. This album is hang tested and dude approved! It's also limited to only 100 copies so you better act fast! I've been looking for a copy of this for some time now but haven't had any luck. Original LP copies easily go for $40+ online.

This is the second press on black wax, and the third press in total. I believe the first edition was on pink wax?? $20 plus $3 shipping gets you a copy. Buy here. $40 plus $3 shipping gets you the album plus a personalized drawing from King Tuff himself. You tell him what to draw and he will draw it. Buy here. That's a pretty cool idea, but I don't think I want a $20 drawing, maybe a $5 drawing..

EDIT: SOLD OUT!
EDIT: You can still purchase @ Colonel Records.

Gap Dream - Gap Dream

As much as I don't want to admit it, I discovered Gap Dream through Pitchfork a couple weeks back. Gap Dream hails from Cleveland, Ohio and plays "dreamy" lo-fi garage pop. Their Self Titled album is out on cassette only through Burger Records. Buy Here. $6 gets you a hand numbered edition out of 250 copies. Check out their Tumblr & Bandcamp for more info. Needless to say this has been in heavy rotation for me the past couple weeks. Great album all the way through. (Is there any other way to listen to music?)

These Are Words - S/T

These Are Words are Corey Anderson on lead vocals/guitar and Dan Levine and Ian Rundell, who split their time between bass and drums. Hailing from Austin, Texas they serve up some killer garage rock. Their biggest influence is said to be Austin natives The 13th Floor Elevators. Unlike a great majority of garage punk these guys aren't afraid of playing past the two minute point. From their bandcamp website, I see a Self Titled cassette of 4 songs, and a random 11.5 minute jam. The cassette is $4 and I believe it was $2 shipping. Limited to 100 copies. I have yet to see them play live but I'm greatly looking forward to it. These guys rock!

Shapes Have Fangs - Dinner In The Dark

I can't believe I haven't posted about one of my favorite local Austin bands: Shapes Have Fangs. The bands consists of brothers Skyler and Evan McGlothlin, Dustin Coffey and Josh Willis. First thought of the band reminds you of a flash back of the 60's British invasion, namely the Kinks. More accurately they are rhythm-driven, fuzzed-out garage pop.

They own their own record label named: Laguna Studio, and have helped record bands such as: Flesh Lights, ELVIS, Woven Bones, John Wesley Coleman III, Finally Punk, Rayon Beach, White Dog, Horse & Donkey, Breathing Problem, Night Beats, The Ripe, Followed By Static, Cry Blood Apache, Christian Bland & The Revelators, The Fabulous Bread Winners, Total Abuse, The Zoltars, The Fleshlights, Amplified Heat, Hatchet Wound, The Rich Hands Band, Holy Wave, Bang Bang Theodores, Ghost Lapse, UFO Club, S U R V I V E, Apache Dropout, & White Dog.

The local quartet's debut album is under The Black Angels label The Reverberation Appreciation Society. You can purchased here. $15-vinyl, $30-vinyl & shirt, $8 digital download.

They also have a split 7" with a band named Cave Dwellers through Business Deal Records. You can purchase here or there's several copies at Waterloo Records.

Toro Y Moi - June 2009 - Pre-Order

Toro Y Moi's - June 2009 - 5x7" box-set is out April 24th through Carpark Records. Currently the only location to pre-order the box-set is through the website Insound. The price is a fairly reasonable $24.98 + shipping. This release was originally on a tour CD-R compilation of the same name.

Tracklisting: (According to original comp.)

02 Dead Pontoon
03 Besta Round

08 New Loved Ones
09 Freak Love
10 Animilia
11 Talamak
12 Blessa
13 Drive South
14 Sad Sams
15 Eden
16 Causers of This

(Original Cover)

Insound description:
"Originally part of the tour-only CD-R of the same name, June 2009 feels like a peek inside the mind of an artist not knowing where to turn once stripped of the structure of school life. He struggles with good friends moving away (“Sad Sams”), the pressing feeling that a move to New York is a necessary career move (“Take The L To Leave”), and the fear that simple pleasures have become a thing of the past (“Ektelon”). But more than nostalgic yearnings for the recent past, the songs are like journal entries—as commemorative as they are therapeutic. Elsewhere, tracks like “Girl Problems” and “Dead Pontoon” show how his first album might have sounded if “109” had been that first single’s A-side, with reverb-soaked, angular guitar riffs serving as focal points of the power-pop periphery. Also included is an early version of Causers standout “Talamak,” one of his first cuts to make the blog rounds and an interesting insight into the process of reformatting his work to fit with the album. Closer “New Loved Ones” sees Bundick in a rare, intimate environment, accompanied only by an acoustic guitar and in the throes of love lost. With songs varied in style but bound together by their personal subject matter, June 2009 is a portrait of a young man unknowingly on the cusp of a fruitful career."

Bruise Cruise Single Series

Earlier I reported on the Bruise Cruise Festival, which is a three day tropical rock extravaganza from  Miami, Florida, to Nassau, Bahamas, and back. From February 10-13 patrons enjoy casinos, pools, miniature golf, water parks, fine dining, all you can eat buffets, and most importantly you get to party with and get entertained by 14 rock bands and 1 comedian (Neil Hamburger).

Lineup includes: Fucked Up, King Khan and The Shrines, Thee Oh Sees, The Soft Pack, The Dirtbombs, Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Mikal Cronin, The Togas, Vockah Redu, Jello Biafra, Anna Seregina, Kyp Malone, DJ Mr. Johnathon Toubin, and a DJ set from The Vivian Girls.

Along with the cruise, patrons also receive free 7" singles of participating bands. This years contributors are from Thee Oh Sees, Mikal Cronin, King Khan and The Shrines, Quintron & Miss Pussycat, The Dirtbombs, F*cked Up, and Neil Hamburger.

Personally I was a little disappointed with this years series. Three music splits and one comedic 7". Last year they also had 4 splits, but in my opinion, of better bands. Buy last years singles. They should have made records of all particapating bands! This years 7"s were all pressed on black vinyl, compared to last years colored.

I purchased the King Khan and The Shrines/Mikal Cronin Split 7" & Thee Oh Sees/Quintron & Miss Pussycat Split 7" today at a increased price of $9.99 (more expensive than last year.) I don't think I'm even interested in the Dirtbombs/F*cked Up 7". The King Khan/Mikal Cronin split I recommend, but the Oh See's song was more of a weird rant, and the Quintron & Miss Pussycat song was from the weaker vocalist Miss Pussycat. And finally, why would I want a 7" of a comedian telling one 2-minute joke? No thanks.

No siting of the 7"s for sale officially on there website, but they have been poping up at local record stores and on ebay/discogs. All singles are limited to 500 copies. Expect to see a flurry of singles on ebay in the following couple days with cruise patrons returning from sea.

Show Alert: Stephen Malkmus & The Jinks @ The Mohawk 2/22/12

Stephen Malkmus is best known for being the lead singer of the American alternative rock band Pavement, which consisted of Stephen Malkmus (guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Scott Kannburg (guitar and vocals), Steve West (drums), and Bob Nastanovich (backing vocals, keyboards and other instruments.) Pavement have recently reunited and have been touring slightly, but Stephen Malkmus & The Jinks seem to be more prevalent on touring.

The show will be held at my personal favorite The Mohawk Bar. This is a early show with doors at 6:30 and the show starting at 7:30. Tickets are $17.00 advance and $20.00 at the door on the day of show. With service charges @ Waterloo Records the price rang up to $21.13. The opening bands will be Nurses, who hail from Portland, and Austin, Texas' own TV Torso.
